Columbia, SC "The Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works was recognized by the South Carolina Municipal Insurance Trust for workplace safety in the Division III category. Division III was for cities and towns with more than 150 employees. The South Carolina Municipal Insurance Trust, sponsored by the Municipal Association of South Carolina, is the CPW's workers" compensation insurance provider.

The Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works has been a SCMIT member since 1984 and has worked aggressively to reduce the frequency and severity of their workers" compensation claims. By working with the SCMIT loss control staff, Greenwood CPW has analyzed its workers compensation losses, utilizing the SCMIT annual report card to focus risk management efforts on those departments that are struggling. The CPW has an active training program and frequently attends the specialized training sessions provided by SCMIT.

Award winners were determined based on a formula that includes the number of hours employees work along with the severity and frequency of incidences on the job. There were three population divisions with one winner in each division. Winners received a plaque, $2500 to purchase safety equipment and training for their municipal employees, and a recognition luncheon. CPW officials were recognized at the Municipal Association's Annual Meeting on July 19.

The SCMIT program is member-owned and was established in the 1980s as a response to the lack of stable and affordable insurance coverage for SC cities and towns. In addition to insurance benefits designed specifically for municipal governments, the program offers free onsite and online training, grant funding, access to a labor hotline and other benefits.
