The Orangeburg Downtown Revitalization Association, City of Orangeburg, Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce and Orangeburg County were awarded the 2015 Main Street South Carolina Outstanding Public Private Partnership Award at the Municipal Association's Annual Meeting on July 18. They were nominated by Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association. Main Street South Carolina is a program of the Municipal Association of South Carolina.

The award recognizes a public/private partnership that has resulted in successful achievements for both and clearly demonstrates a cooperative spirit and long-term commitment to the partnership.

In 2014, the Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association, City of Orangeburg, Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce and Orangeburg County came together to take on an extensive community vision planning process. The four partners contributed the original funding, with the County Development Commission providing additional support.

Beyond providing funding, the partners encouraged their constituents to participate in the planning process. The resulting plan provides a roadmap for the city and downtown organization to follow for downtown revitalization.

Currently implementing the plan, the partners have maintained their commitment to seeing the plan come to fruition. They meet regularly to discuss implementation strategies. Other organizations in the community have endorsed the plan, including Claflin University, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, the Regional Medical Center and Orangeburg Preparatory School.

"Working together, these public and private partners have made Orangeburg a better place. Their hard work and determination have added that kind of vibrancy to downtown Orangeburg," said Beppie LeGrand, Main Street SC manager.
