Main Street South Carolina recognized the Beaufort Downtown Plate Crawl with its Outstanding Promotion Award at the Municipal Association's 74th Annual Meeting on July 12. Main Street Beaufort, USA, nominated the festival. Main Street South Carolina is a program of the Municipal Association of South Carolina.

The award recognizes either a single promotional event staged during 2013 or the best promotional series during 2013.
Main Street Beaufort, USA sponsored the event that put home cooks and professional local chefs head to head in a tasting competition.
Organizers had three goals in mind when they created the special event: celebrate the downtown's culinary attractions, encourage people to walk down Main Street and through all of downtown, and entice people downtown during a normally slow time of year. Eight downtown restaurants participated in the event.
Home cooks submitted what dish they wanted to enter in the taste-testing challenge. After reviewing the submissions, each professional chef chose one entry to compete against. Each tasting station had two of the same dish-one prepared by the home cook, the other by a local chef. Ticketholders conducted a blind-taste test of the dishes then voted on their favorites. At the end of the evening, home cooks won five out of the eight challenges.
Downtown retailers participated in the successful event by staying open late and offering drinks.
"The Downtown Plate Crawl boosted business and interest in Beaufort's downtown by bringing both residents and newcomers to the area for a creative and successful event ," said Beppie LeGrand, Main Street SC manager.
